Powering Jharkhand

Wednesday - Thursday

April 11-12, 2012

Radisson Blu | Ranchi

    • Overview

The Independent Power Producers Association of India (IPPAI) has been organising state-level conferences with the support of state electricity regulatory commissions to bring together various stakeholders in an informal setting to discuss issues and review the progress being made in the power sector

IPPAI has organised events in Haryana, Maharashtra, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat and North Eastern India in the past few months where government up to the level of the Chief Minister, and state and central regulators have interacted with electricity consumers, discoms, power producers, investors and industry and have reviewed the transition of the reforms post Electricity Act 2003 including development of power markets and consumer choice.

Each state has moved at its own pace keeping in mind its priorities post Electricity Act 2003. Therefore, the development of the power market is at a different level in every state. This has been viewed by investors in the power sector accordingly.

The conference in Ranchi was organised for the benefit of investors and various stakeholders in Jharkhand. The state is a reservoir of talent and rich natural resources with great economic potential. A major hurdle in the development of this potential is the chronic power shortage situation in many parts of Jharkhand.

Harnessing the immense untapped power potential in Jharkhand opens avenues for economic growth and provides cascading benefits in terms of further industrialization, development of a services sector and growth in employment opportunities. The state can be the power hub of India.

The focus of the conference was on attracting new investments in the power sector in Jharkhand. The topics examined included development of the power sector – generation, transmission and distribution, issues in coal allocations and linkages, the provision of open access, surcharge, incentivising renewable energy and energy efficiency, creation of a vibrant power market and actualising consumer choice.

Participation at the conference is included regulators, policymakers, investors, project developers, consumers, utilities and stakeholders from Jharkhand as also from other states.
